What You Can Do Now to Prepare for the FAFSA 2024-25 Application
Copper Leaf Financial Associate Wealth Advisor Jackie Winkler has published a new article on LinkedIn sharing important tips for what you can do NOW to prepare for the December launch of the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application.
FAFSA is an important form that can help students and their families secure financial assistance for higher education. While the 2024-25 FAFSA is set to be released in December, it’s not too early to prepare for a smooth filing experience. Take a few simple steps to ensure you’re well-prepared when the application launches.
Get Logged-in Early
Whether you’re a first-time filer or have filed before, it’s important to ensure you can access your account on the FAFSA website: https://studentaid.gov/.
First Time Filers
If you’re filing for the first time create your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID as soon as possible. This is especially important so that your email is on file, and you will be notified when the form is released. Your student will need to create their own FSA login as well.
Previous Filers
For those who have previously filed the FAFSA, it’s essential that you login to ensure you can access your existing account. Be sure to verify your login credentials and reset your password if necessary. Having easy access to your FSA account will save you time and reduce stress when the application is available.
Get Your Documents Organized
One of the most critical aspects of FAFSA preparation is gathering your financial documents. For the 2024-25 aid year you will need to have access to your 2022 tax return. While there is an IRS lookup tool available, it may not work for everyone. The IRS has updated its return access method for this year’s FAFSA, so it may appear different from previous versions. Ensuring you have your tax information accessible is key to a smooth application process.
In addition to your tax return, organize your online access for all bank and investment accounts. The FAFSA requires you to report the value of these accounts as of the filing day, so having easy access to these balances beforehand is crucial. This step in your preparation will prevent last-minute log-in issues and delays.
